A Focus on Total Wellness
There is no single explanation for how and why some people live longer and have more active years than others. But there is a place where more people live longer and healthier than any other place on earth: Okinawa, Japan. Scientists have been studying this group of seniors to see if we could learn from their methods and live longer, more productive lives ourselves. Home Care Assistance developed the Balanced Care Method™, a revolutionary approach to senior care, based on these studies.
Life spans of over 100 years are not unusual in Okinawa. More importantly, people in their 70s, 80s, 90’s and beyond enjoy incredibly good health and independence despite their years. The Balanced Care Method™ promotes the lifestyle factors central to these centenarian’s longevity. It is a philosophy that can be summed up in two words: moderation and variety.
Day to Day Life Enhanced and Enriched through Care Worker Training
The Balanced Care Method™ is an evidence-based program built on studies that demonstrate that only one-third of our longevity is based on genetics and two-thirds on lifestyle factors within our control.
Home Care Assistance care workers are trained in the Method, offering the first senior care solution with an emphasis on balance and longevity. Our Balanced Care Method teaches our care workers on the importance of nutrition, exercise, social ties, mental and spiritual health, and how all these things can contribute to longevity and well-being for the elderly and individuals of all ages. Care workers are also trained in knowing what foods are the most beneficial, depending on the client’s health, habits and goals. By working with specific lifestyle behaviours, we enhance the lives of our clients, helping them live longer, happier, more balanced lives.

A Research-Based Approach to Long-Term Brain Health with our Cognitive Therapeutics Method™
An extension of our Balanced Care Method, the Cognitive Therapeutics Method is a brain health program developed by researchers at Home Care Assistance. The program aims to improve quality of life through a holistic approach incorporating positive lifestyle improvements, as well as personalised, one-on-one activities that engage the main cognitive domains of the brain.
The program’s activities target more than just memory and engage other cognitive functions including the executive functioning, attention, language, and visual spatial domains. This approach goes hand-in-hand with lifestyle improvements in physical activity, social engagement, diet and more. The Cognitive Therapeutics Method approach is based on scientific research pointing to non- pharmacological activity and lifestyle intervention as an effective way to promote long-term brain health and was developed by a research team led by a neuropsychologist.
The Cognitive Therapeutics Method is a complement to our Balanced Care Method™ and is a key part of our multi-pronged approach to healthy ageing, specifically focused on the brain. At Home Care Assistance, we believe in extending healthy years and work with each individual to help them achieve health and meaningfulness in longevity. Read below to get an understanding of how it has helped one of our families:
“Last year my mum fell and received a new diagnosis of dementia in addition to her mild Alzheimer’s disease. She required a Care Worker while I worked, but had multiple problems with those sent to us by various agencies because of her dementia diagnosis. Day programs were too lengthy and boring for her. After further enquiries, I called Home Care Assistance. In addition to Care Workers, they also have a division devoted to The Cognitive Therapeutics Method. My mother was interviewed as to her interests and abilities and matched to a therapist (whom they call interventionists) who developed a program especially for her. She enjoys the stimulating puzzles and word games, in addition to music and physical exercise. This service has been a godsend for both her and me. She is calm and content when I return home from work. I have not had calls at work from emergency workers to intervene with my mum’s behaviour. She accepted the interventionist from the start and works with her without problems. These people are true professionals and I cannot thank them enough for being able to handle her care while I am at work.”
